This page is to help you get started with Scouting and answer common questions about membership. You'll find information about our group and the sections we run, as well as information about fees and uniforms. We're excited for your child to begin their Scouting adventure with us and look forward to welcoming you to the group.
Mary Mant
President, 5th Portsmouth Scout Group
We're delighted you're interested in joining our worldwide family of Scouts! At 5th Portsmouth, we believe in equipping young people with skills for life. Through fun adventures and activities, we help kids aged 6-14+ develop crucial skills like teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
It doesn't cost as much as you might think!
Membership fees (subs): £39 per term, covering insurance, hall hire, and equipment. A couple of things to be aware of:
fees cover membership rather than meetings, as such there are no refunds for meetings missed by a member;
anyone starting mid-term will be charged pro-rata for membership from when they join;
anyone leaving mid-term may be refunded on a case by case basis (to be agreed by the Section Team Leader);
Cashless system: We use online payments for membership fees and all event/camp related costs.
Non-Uniform items: Our unique Red activity tops (t-shirts and hoodies), replacement neckers, and spare woggles are available for purchase. We also run a Uniform Bank for pre-used items.
Here's what makes us special:
Three Sections: We offer age-appropriate programs for Beavers (6-8 yrs), Cubs (8-10.5 yrs), and Scouts (10.5-14 yrs), meeting Monday evenings at St James' Church Hall.
Exciting Activities: From kayaking to coding, we offer a diverse range of activities that build character, employability, and practical skills.
Achievement & Recognition: We celebrate milestones through badges and awards, encouraging progress and a sense of accomplishment.
Camps & Events: We organize special events like camps, hikes, and more, creating lasting memories and fostering a sense of community.
Safety First: We prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all young people. Our leaders undergo training and background checks, and we encourage parent involvement in safeguarding.
If you are coming along for a taster session, just wear something comfortable and neat.
Many new members wear their school polo shirt and school trousers/skirt.
Shortly before you are invested as a member is the time to buy uniform.
